The North East Wildlife & Animal Rescue Centre is a small independent Charity, based just outside Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

We are a sanctuary and haven for many unwanted, abused and abandoned pets, including horses, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs, hens and ducks. Our particular interest is in wildlife rehabilitation, and we have many years experience in hand-rearing orphan birds, and dealing with orphaned and injured mammals.

For more information, including what we do, where we are, and how to contact us, please visit our about page.

THE NEW ARC

Keith here - Picked this cheeky wee beauty up from the lovely people at Aberdeen Vet Referrals the other day. I must admit that my first thought was pheasant chick, quickly changed to partridge.....then possibly skylark. By the time we had checked it over back at the centre I was leaning heavily towards Skylark, but a thank you to our friend Tim Marshall for a definite i.d.
Having said that and looking at the picture of its face with those lovely ‘tear drops’ on its chin I can’t think why I thought it could be anything else.
Although we have had Skylarks before this is the first chick we have received and when we did a wee bit of research on them we found some really surprising facts about them.

The Skylark is in serious decline! In the past 30 years the population has plummeted by 90% putting this easily recognisable and well known songster on the ‘Red list’ of endangered UK species and yet this is a bird that should be thriving in our countryside.
Skylarks can produce several broods each year and have an amazingly fast incubation period, usually 3 to 6 eggs and it only takes around 11 days before they hatch. Both parents feed the chicks on a diet of insects for the first ten or eleven days before the youngsters leave the nest and distribute themselves around the area. They are self reliant and able to fly from 18 to 20 days old.

Unfortunately it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out why they are in decline...... Intensive monoculture farming and pesticides.

At this rate of decline I don’t know what the future is for this wonderful bird, but in the meantime I will continue to enjoy their skydancing and song every time we walk our dogs.

Register as an animal ambulance

Would you like to volunteer your services as an animal ambulance for your area?

As and when we need someone to transport a sick or injured animal to The New Arc, we query our database of registered drivers and try to contact the nearest available volunteer to the patient.

The New Arc is based near Ellon, in Aberdeenshire. For an interactive map of where to find us, tap here.

What’s the commitment?

There is no commitment! We gratefully accept your offer to help if you are available at the time of asking. If you’re not available when called upon, that’s absolutely fine – we will try to contact another driver. It’s important to get as many volunteer drivers into our database as possible, so if you have family, friends, or neighbours who may be willing to help out, please do point them in the direction of this page!

Do volunteer ambulance drivers get paid?

Unfortunately, we are not currently able to offer any financial incentive, nor cover any expenses.

Ready to volunteer?

We hope you enjoy our site! Please do to visit us again - we will be updating regularly.

If you have any questions about animals, be it advice, wanting to find a new home for your pet, adoption or needing assistance with a rescue, please contact us either by telephone (0796 225 3867), Facebook, or contact form.  We look forward to hearing from you!
