The North East Wildlife & Animal Rescue Centre is a small independent Charity, based just outside Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

We are a sanctuary and haven for many unwanted, abused and abandoned pets, including horses, goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs, hens and ducks. Our particular interest is in wildlife rehabilitation, and we have many years experience in hand-rearing orphan birds, and dealing with orphaned and injured mammals.

For more information, including what we do, where we are, and how to contact us, please visit our about page.

THE NEW ARC

With almost a thousand wildlife cases coming in already this year, we are often faced with situations where we shed a tear or two. On Thursday this week we received a call from a cyclist in the Elgin area, Matt, who had come across a particularly painful sight......At the side of the road he found a dead adult Red Squirrel. Sadder still was that cuddling into the body was a baby kit who was still alive but desperately clinging on to its mother.
Some rapid phone calls ensued, with Matt’s dad coming to pick them up to transfer to our friends at Moray Coast Vets in Forres, and one of our recently acquired volunteers, Mark, being quickly deployed to do a 130 mile round trip to transfer him safely back to The New Arc centre.
We made the decision to keep both the baby and mother together until they got here to minimise stress and on arrival we had the heart breaking task of persuading the baby to release mum so we could check him over and encourage him to accept some rehydration. The youngster was very thirsty and took some rehydration solution happily, and soon fell into a deep sleep and was placed in an incubator for the night. He is quite a tiny boy, a little underweight for his size and had a few nasty ticks to remove before we could let him settle down.
24 hours later and ‘Samson’ is feeding well and seems to have accepted his ‘new mum’ Pauline. He is quite a bit smaller than our other young ‘Red’ squirrel, ‘Delilah’ but hopefully he will soon catch up and they will then be able to share a large pen together.

THE NEW ARC

On 31st May two lovely ladies arrived - with a badger in the boot of their car (not something we would necessarily recommend!).
However, this young male had been found in the road, and was completely comatose.
We took him in, assessed him, and could find nothing broken, but there was no real response from him either - only his eyes were working!
He received appropriate care and medication, and little by little we could see small improvements, although he needed syringe fed, and helped to move on to eat from a bowl. We were concerned whether his apparent brain damage would be permanent, and had many discussions with our vets
One morning however, I thought he was having me on … he had moved a fair bit during the night and I suspected he was getting active at night once we were away, saving his totally helpless act for daytime pandering! - so the trailcam was set. Ha - caught in the act, badger was promptly named DODGER!
Ok, he was still very wobbly and confused, but a huge improvement. He was however the most terrified, nervous badger we have every come across, so needed gentle quiet handling.
It wasn't too long before Dodger was eating for himself and was able to move more easily, so he was next transferred to an outdoor pen and shed
He continued to improve and then abandoned his cosy bed in the shed, for a newly dug out den UNDER it …. it was time for him to go home
On release back to the exact place he was found, he had a bit of trouble with a gate ….. panic got the better of him I think - he soon rushed off down the field towards a copse (scaring a deer witless in the process!)
Good luck Dodger - we're very proud of you for fighting so hard - have a safe, happy life
